Dissolved air flotation is a water treatment system that is used to remove suspended matter and clarify waste water so that is suitable for re-use or safe disposal. The separation of liquid and solids means oils, greases and other suspended solids are removed in a controlled environment and can be disposed of appropriately.

The removal process involved in dissolved air flotation is achieved by the use of microscopic air bubbles. These bubbles need to be less than 0.1mm in width in order to be effective in the dissolved air flotation system. Put simply these bubbles become attached to the solid particles (matter, grease, oil) that is in the water. The bubbles then float to the surface of the liquid with the solid particles attached.

Because bubbles will float immediately when placed in water the dissolved air flotation system does exactly what its name suggests – dissolves air into the liquid by using pressure. The pressure keeps the bubbles suspended in the wastewater and ensures the particles that lie throughout the liquid attach to the bubbles. The dissolved air remains in the liquid until the pressure is released to atmospheric pressure. This release causes the air to come to the surface and out of the solution in the form of microscopic bubbles. The solids then form a "blanket" over the top of the water which can then be skimmed and removed.

Dissolved air flotation is widely used in a variety of industries for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Some of these industries include oil refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical plants, natural gas processing plants and other similar industrial facilities. The system of dissolved air flotation as been commercially used since the early 1960’s. Since then the systems have been refined and are much more reliable and will continue to advance as new systems and technologies are discovered and introduced.
